The cooperative action game Ashen is aimed at playing on the Internet online, joining forces with a friend for free on a pirate site. You can play online with a partner or go on a solo adventure. While exploring the open world, you need to look for the Ash Bird. The possibility of free online play allows you to develop a settlement where you will need to constantly return to rest, upgrade and replenish supplies. From a small tent camp you can build an entire city.

In a single playthrough, the hero is accompanied by NPCs, and online play allows live players to take control of one of the heroes. The world of Ashen is a dark fantasy kingdom where there is no sun. After the Ashen One disappeared, the kingdom was plunged into darkness. During your journey you can meet other players. This mechanic is borrowed from Journey. You are allowed to either pass by the wanderers or ask them to join.

The combat system is represented by soul mechanics. Every fight is a real challenge. Movements are aimed at parrying, counterattacking, dodging, etc. There is a stamina scale that forces you to be more attentive to your actions. The world is generated randomly. The heroes will visit swamps, fjords, palaces, dungeons, forests and many other locations. The flora and fauna are distinguished by their aggressiveness. Every element of the dark world can kill characters, so you need to be as careful as possible when stepping into new lands. By destroying enemies, you accumulate experience that can be spent on learning different skills. For example, it is possible to master craft skills, be it blacksmithing or collecting provisions.
