Backyard Baseball ‘01 is a sports simulator where users manage a baseball team. The central mechanics consists in creating a roster by selecting from 30 young athletes and 28 professional athletes of the MLB of that period. Users can participate in various formats of the game, from a single exhibition match until the full season leading to the championship. The training mode is also available for testing timing, allowing the chosen Batter to meet Mr. clan.

This title includes the symbols of MLB clubs, which allows to personalize the formed composition. The process of players’ draft is a key part of the Backyard Baseball ‘01, offering an option of a quick random match or step -by -step selection against a computer opponent. This draft comes from a pool of characters, including famous children’s heroes and MLB professionals, such as Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Cel Ripken Jr., Sammy Sosa and Ivan Rodriguez. During the gameplay, performance can be influenced by activating special abilities called bonuses.

There are 9 strengthening for pitchens and 4 for Batter, introducing strategic variables to every attempt to beat off the ball and defensive situation. Gamer leads his team in matches taking place at 8 different stadiums, each with its own field size. The complexity is configured by the choice of levels light, medium and complex, changing the competence of a computer opponent. Promotion in seasonal format requires stable results to win over other compositions in the league. Comments are provided by the characters of Sanny Day and Winnie, responding to events on the field.
