Hearts of Iron 4’s single-player campaign spans the period from 1936 to 1948. In total, two scenarios are presented, the actions of which develop in different periods of time. Players encounter events such as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, the Japanese invasion of China, etc.

A special feature of the gameplay is the system of national focuses. They determine the style of passing and the strategy of the army. They also help improve skills. Each country can establish one of the ideologies: democracy, communism, fascism or neutrality. Ideologies also have a huge impact on the development of the country and provide certain boosts and passives. Add-ons are represented by the campaigns Poland: United and Ready, Death or Dishonor, Man the Guns and others. They add new units, focuses, buildings, and also update some mechanics.
